Self Care in Quarantine

by Christine Davage

Who has a bunch of ‘to-do’ list items they’re working through at home? Keeping busy is good, but don’t forget to take some time to take care of you too! As we adjust to this new reality, lots of us have kids and partners at home, as well as trying to do our own work from home. Anybody else convert their laundry room into a home office yet?

In the middle of all of this, we have slower mornings and slower evenings. With no commute and no social obligations, it’s the perfect time to start using that skincare you had the best of intentions for!

Here’s a couple of ideas to get the ball rolling - I’d love to hear yours too!

Epsom salt baths

I love a long bath, and now I have time to take them! In a few large mason jars, I’ve combined Epsom salts with my favourite essential oils, so they’re ready to go whenever I am. Essential oils and water don’t mix, so don’t forget your carrier! You don’t want a skin of neat oils floating on top of your water. Not only is it not necessarily skin-safe (depending on your choice), but they will evaporate very quickly with the heat and you won’t get to wallow in them for as long.

My current favourites have been lavender, palmarosa (March’s free product of the month here in Canada), and cedarwood (10 drops of each, in 2 tablespoons of fractionated coconut oil, stirred through a large mason jar of salt).

Sleep eluded me at the beginning of our quarantine (we got sick very early on this whole thing, so by the time everyone was staying home, we had already been home for 10 days - sob!), and a warm salty bath with lavender and cedarwood was so helpful.

This smells so good my 7-year-old boy is now taking requesting mid-afternoon baths. I’d call that a win. His favourite blend has been eucalyptus and citrus bliss.

Facemasks

Nobody can see you, so it’s time to crack out that DoTerra Spa mud mask! I have incredibly sensitive skin, and I can’t leave it on for 10-15 minutes because it’s so potent. I put it on before I start the shower up in the morning (no time pressure…) and brush my teeth. By the time I’m done with that, I jump in the shower and rinse it off with a magic makeup remover cloth.

My skin has never been better than since I stopped leaving the house…

Diffusing

Tensions can run high in a houseful, and I’ve been using diffusers in every room to facilitate managing the emotional and physical health challenges that this has brought.

Obviously, the On Guard is a staple. It’s cleansing and purifying, and smells like Christmas. But if you don’t keep changing it up, you’ll go nose-blind. And run out of precious On Guard. When we were unwell, I enjoyed EasyAir (or Breathe - depending on which market you live in!), Eucalyptus, Melissa, and Lime. Now we are all on the mend, my focus has been on uplifting blends. Arise from the Yoga kit has been wonderful, as has Lemon Eucalyptus.

The doTERRA® Adaptiv™ System is an effective answer to reducing tension and helping to empower and encourage when adapting to difficult situations or acclimating to new surroundings. Adaptiv capsules combine clinically studied botanicals with a blend of essential oils to help manage the effects of stress and anxious feelings.

I couldn’t really say it better. The Adaptive kit contains capsules, a roller, and a 15ml oil which I diffuse. The oil blend contains Wild Orange, Lavender, Copaiba, Spearmint, Magnolia, Rosemary, Neroli, and Sweetgum. I was already a fan before this, but I wouldn’t be without it. Each part is available separately, but you save quite a bit buying the kit.

Copaiba

For instant stress relief, pop a drop of Copaiba under your tongue. It contains beta-caryophyllene (“BCP”), which is a cannabinoid and a sesquiterpene (which delivers oxygen molecules to cells). BCP is found in hundreds of different plant species. There is no THC in Copaiba, and it is not marijuana. It does not produce any kind of high.

What it does do, is work with your endocannabinoid system and parasympathetic nervous system to help you bring you back in line to a healthy and comfortable place. It’s an incredibly powerful tool to have at your disposal, especially if you have struggled with anxious feelings at any point in your life. Retraining our bodies to have healthy fear responses is a journey, and worthy of its own post, but for now: Just use your Copaiba!

Being a Loyalty Rewards Customer with DoTerra means that I have the opportunity to try a lot of different oils that I probably wouldn’t have sought out by myself, as well as getting them at deep discounts, and a number of them at no charge at all. If you’re wondering if you could also benefit from this, the answer is yes.

There is no need to run a business to be a Loyalty Rewards Customer, the program is available to everyone.

When we were told at the hospital that our whole household was now quarantined, and there would be no stopping at the shops on the way home, I was so grateful that I already had the things I would use to support my families health, and I wasn't left wishing I’d picked them up earlier.
