Have you ever heard of Oil pulling?
Oil pulling is a very old ayurvedic tradition, but it's gained popularity in recent years and it's so simple to do.
The basic premise is that you take 1-2 tbsps oil (traditionally sesame, but lots of people have great results with coconut) and swish it around in your mouth for around 10- 20 minutes (minimum of five is required for emulsification), then spit out. It's important to spit, because the name 'pulling' refers to 'pulling' bacteria and toxins from the body, so you don't really want to ingest them after! There are a tonne of health benefits associated with oil pulling, even without adding any essential oils!
Adding essential oils is a great option though, especially if you need to help support your gums inflammatory processes or want to whiten your teeth a little, but most importantly for me, it flavours the oil and makes it far more tolerable.
Top tips for beginners:
Do this first thing in the morning before you eat or drink. Overnight is when our bodies are detoxing and bacteria tend to build up on the mouth/tongue.
If you don't like the feel of oil in your mouth (it makes me gag too) try using solid coconut oil. Sounds weird, but chewing it up and letting it melt helps my body acclimate to the sensation of it. Just be sure to spit in a tissue in the bin - not your sink - as the oil will resolidify and block your pipes!
Do it in the shower. If you have a strong gag reflex, for some reason showering seems to distract me from thinking about it too much.
Add your favourite essential oil flavourings. Yes, there are oils with different benefits, but whilst you're getting started, just use something you like - myrrh
is an acquired taste!
