In days of old, before running water in our taps and chlorinated pools, we used wells, springs, rivers, and ocean water to drink, bathe and exercise. Whilst convenient access to clean, safe, water is a massive perk of modern-day life, there is a trade off, and that's the minerals that we used to unconsciously enjoy, with no knowledge of their existence. It's one of the reasons that I love the life long vitality supplements
so much; because that microplex VMZ is an amazing source of minerals and taking it daily gives me peace of mind that I'm not going to develop any deficiencies.
One of the key ones, that you have probably heard of if you suffer from restless legs, stress or sleep struggles, is a little mineral known as magnesium.
How do I know if I need more magnesium?
Low magnesium levels can cause mood swings, apathy, confusion, fatigue, inattentiveness, withdrawn social behaviour, headaches, dizziness, insomnia, tingling in hands and feet, memory problems, concentration issues, numbness, depression, muscle cramps, compulsive behaviour and more.
For me, I know I need a little more magnesium in my life when I'm tossing and turning and can't stay still at bedtime.
The thing is, oral intake of magnesium isn't really the best way for you to improve your levels, so even though I love my Lifelong vitality, I still like to make up a product that I can use transdermally to ensure me and my family are getting enough.
Usually, we like to add Epsom salts
to our baths, both for added minerals but also because they are a great way to add our oils to our baths without them sitting on the surface of the water (remember oils and water don't mix without a dispersant!) but we don't always have time for a bath daily and showers are just so much more convenient. You can just use a magnesium oil
, but I find that using it regularly can cause skin irritation, particularly for my son.
So what's the solution?
Making your own magnesium lotion means all the benefits and convenience of magnesium oil, without the skin irritation.
It's also a really nice way to incorporate essential oils into your life, because you can enjoy the calming benefits of magnesium alongside some oils that promote relaxation or support mood to really create a beautiful self care ritual or bonding experience with a loved one.
Make this a part of your nightly routine to help settle little ones, or yourself, by applying daily before bed. You can use any calming essential oils you like, but I highly recommend Balance, Serenity or Adaptiv.
